Many IT managers have an engineering background. Does this mean they transitioned to management because they were once bad programmers?
Years ago, I explored the management path but quickly realized that both engineering and management require very different skill sets. I chose to remain an engineer because my passion lies in building and creating. I'm an engineer at heart. ❤️🔥
This insight sheds light on why some programmers become managers while others remain in technical roles. The skill sets for each are distinct, and proficiency in one doesn't necessarily correlate with success in the other.
Throughout my career, I've seen all types:
- Rockstar Programmers & Inspiring Leaders
- Coding Newbies Who Excel at Management
- Tech Gurus Who Struggle with Management
- Areas for Improvement on Both Sides (We’ve all been there!)
As you progress in your engineering career to senior levels, some management skills become essential.
What are your thoughts? Have you observed these dynamics at play in your career?
